Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

The physician who specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is known as a physiatrist. Physiatrists diagnose, evaluate, and treat patients who have major and minor physical disabilities, many of which are musculoskeletal (such as spine pain), or neurological in nature (such as spinal cord injury). The physiatrist's goal is to optimally restore physical function, relieve pain, and minimize the psychological, social, and vocational effects of disability.

Physiatrists use the routine history and physical examination, and other diagnostic techniques as do other physicians, but also frequently elect to use special techniques such as electrodiagnosis as an extension of the physical examination. The physiatrist not only treats patients with medications, but also prescribes treatment modalities such as heat, cold, and electrical stimulation, as well as therapeutic exercise. Physiatrists are experts in non-surgical treatment of spinal problems and both doctors in this department are trained in the use of epidural steroid injections and facet injections.

Physiatrists are expert in determining the appropriate prosthetic and orthotic devices and electrical and mechanical assists for the patient. Physiatrists are knowledgeable about the most modern devices and techniques, yet are sensitive to the individual who is suffering from injury, disease, or disability. This patient-centered specialty attracts and requires physician specialists who are particularly skilled in listening to and in communicating with their patients. Physiatrist are specialists who treat the whole person rather than a single system or disease.
